Community Engagement Support Officer (Syphilis Enhanced Response)

As part of Wurli’s vision to “To move forward as one, to heal our people and improve our health”, Wurli is seeking a Community Engagement Support Officer to join the Syphilis Response team.

The Community Engagement Support Officer (Sexual Educator) is a position that provides for an integral link between our communities, clients and potential clients. The role is responsible for providing a high level of culturally appropriate support and authenticity to the Health Promotions program at Wurli. Key responsibility of the role will include community engagement, education, promotion, advocacy and to provide cultural mentoring and guidance to our non-indigenous team members.

An example of the duties to be performed include:

  • Provide culturally appropriate and interpretative support, assistant and education to clients, their family and the community across a range of topics that promote Health
  • Assist prepare and deliver health promotion activities and materials that are designed to meet the needs of the client and the communities we service
  • Assist other program areas within Wurli with health promotion initiatives and materials
  • Facilitate and coordinate a range of health promotion activities / events as relevant to identified needs
  • Actively participate in acquiring the skills and knowledge required to support the delivery of  promotion, education and advocacy of Wurli service / program area
  • Provide feedback to Wurli from the community in relation to their specific needs and concerns
  • Support and encourage individuals, families and community to become involved in healthy lifestyle choices
  • Work with other key stakeholders and associations in Katherine to raise awareness of the benefits of good health

Whilst qualifications are not essential, we are seeking an individual who can demonstrate:-

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Indigenous communities within the Wurli service area
  • Passionate about improving the health and wellbeing outcomes for indigenous people
  • An awareness and understanding of health issues that impact our communities
  • Ability to develop and cultivate sound community and client relationships and communicate sensitively and effectively with Indigenous people (Bilingual oral communication skills a benefit)
  • Professional presentation and confident with public speaking
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Sound computer skills including the ability to use MS Office Suite (including Outlook) and Communicare or equivalent systems
  • Current National Police Records Check
  • Working with Children’s Clearance
  • Current Northern Territory Driver’s License
