GP Registrars
With an (unfortunately) high number of clients presenting with a broad range of conditions, we provide General Practitioners in training (Registrars, Junior Doctors, and Medical Students) with a great opportunity to gain experience in Indigenous health.
Supervision is provided by any of our qualified and experienced General Practitioners, and the employment conditions are very attractive. Fully furnished accommodation can be arranged, and under certain conditions, provided (at a subsidised rental).
Dr Jo Mesure – July 2006 to January 2007
Dr Joanna Mesure completed her second, or Advanced, General Practice term at Wurli.
“I started late in general practice, having spent several years moving around the world working in medicine in many different countries. I have found that working at Wurli Wurlinjang offers some of the best experience yet. The medicine is very interesting and challenging. It can be very rewarding, although not without some frustrations. It is possible to gain experience in a variety of Aboriginal health issues, including chronic disease and acute infectious disease, as well as plenty of practical minor procedures. The medical team of doctors and health workers is incredibly friendly and supportive, and the whole environment is a relaxed and welcoming one.
This term has also provided the opportunity to bring my family and explore some of the great attractions in nearby areas, such as Kakadu, Katherine Gorge and even some crocodile spotting! I highly recommend a term here for any Registrar interested in Aboriginal health.”

Dr Rachel Loong – January 2006 to June 2006
Dr. Rachel Loong completed her Subsequent Term in GP training at Wurli.
“Wurli Wurlinjang is a great place for registrars interested in seeing something different, and provides a fantastic opportunity to gain exposure in Aboriginal health.
The staff are friendly and supportive, and with the very reasonable working hours, there is plenty of time to take advantage of what Katherine and the region have to offer: Katherine Gorge and Kakadu National Park are nearby, and the town has a lively arts and sporting culture. For anyone keen to see another part of Australia, Katherine really is a lovely place to stay in. And Darwin is only three hours away if you are ever in need to be in the big smoke!”

Dr Michelle Scerri – July 2007 to Current
Dr Michelle Scerri is completing her Subsequent Term in GP training at Wurli. She recently completed her Fellowship exams, and is anxiously awaiting the results (or just won’t tell us).
“Working at Wurli’s a fantastic experience…you’re part of a large team, with a diverse range of skills, and collectively, we’re able to provide such comprehensive primary health care.
And living in Katherine is great…a lively community, surrounded in every direction by beautiful National Parks. Almost the Centre of the Universe really…”

Dr Aleeta Fejo – January 2007 to Current
Dr Aleeta Fejo is completing her basic and advanced terms in GP training at Wurli.
“I have found Wurli to be a great place to work. The staff are supportive, and the clients are generally very nice. The medicine is interesting, and often presents some interesting challenges.
And despite what a lot of people may think, Katherine is really not that isolated…only 3 hours drive to Darwin. In fact, this year, I’ve been returning to Darwin every weekend (not to get out of Katherine, but to spend time with my family). The registrars are great, and we meet regularly to discuss our progress.”
